Incentives, Distributions, and the Accuracy of Subjective Health Risks
In an online experiment, I implement and test experimental methods to elicit subjective beliefs about personal health risks in a 2x2 treatment design. Monetary incentives reduce errors when subjects can communicate the degree of confidence in their beliefs, but have no effect on point estimates. Importantly, beliefs more strongly predict preventive health behaviors when they exhibit high confidence, suggesting that eliciting both risk perceptions and confidence may improve our understanding of health decisions.
